I only met one female admiral, that was Grace Hopper. She scared the hell out of me.

I can remember Letterman having her on as a guest in the early ‘80s. She was formidable.

I’m trying to remember why she was on. Was the longest-serving person in the U.S. armed forces at the time?

Yes, each service is allowed to have one officer "retired on active duty." Admiral Hopper was it for a while.
