8 is about when both my girls read The Hobbit for the first time. Lord of the Rings followed the next year. A lot of people assume it’s outside kid’s ability, but the truth is they burn through everything put in front of them....maybe they don’t get all the subtleties, but the main story the absorb like a sponge.
I was a bit more concerned with my youngest as she was slower on the uptake than her sister, until I walked into her room to tell her supper was ready one day when she was seven. She had a James Patterson mystery in her hands and looked at me with sparkling eyes and said: “Dad, it’s like a movie in my head”. Knew I never had to worry about her reading ever again.
For the girls: Little Women, Little House on the Prairie, Gone with the Wind, Persuasion, Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, Phantom of the Opera, and The Great Gatsby.
Hopefully half of the 36k will return to their senses if we are lucky. A lot of it depends on what trikkki has to say about her massive loss v. Trump.
Like Libya the child smuggling ring was used as a sample to copy for other criminality. Seems pretty likely. Its not hi-tech. They just plant criminals from top to bottom in law enfor
This has to be one of the first issues Pres. Trump will deal with when he comes back.
I think the producers just had to scrounge for money.
I would toss in things like Doyle's "The White Company" and "The Complete Sherlock Holmes," along with lesser-known Twain works like "Roughing It" and "A Tramp Abroad." A lot of Kipling's stuff (like the collection "The Day's Work") is first-rate, but harder to access these days.
Some kids are not going to be fiction fans, and things like the (older) Golden Guides to Birds, Weather, etc are still good places to get them interested in nature. Horace Kephart's "Camping and Woodcraft" is dated but outdoorsy fun. Authors like L.T.C. Rolt and Dorothy Hartley are worth exploring.
Wild Animals I Have Known, by Seton. A great read.
I’m reading Great Expectations for the first time. There’s unexpected humor in it! And Joe wrings my heart.
Well done...https://rumble.com/v4hqqxx-swamp-wars-it-is-time-meme-rich-environment-eye-drop-media-2023.html
U.S. government officials have grown alarmed that the Haiti National Police could begin to crumble within hours — and that a long-planned multinational mission led by Kenya to provide reinforcements may not be enough to save the country from a complete descent into gang control.
Outgunned Haitian police have been battling a united front of gangs and losing key firefights. Now, a potential power void and a collapse of the Haitian government that had already faced a skeptical public risks undermining whatever morale is left among the police forces.
“The government could fall at any time,” a U.S. official told McClatchy, speaking on the condition of anonymity to candidly discuss the government assessment. “If the HNP dissolves as an effective counterforce, if we see the airport or the presidential palace fall, it’s over.”

Colon cancer cases have risen by 50 percent among adults under 50 years old in the US since 1999 — which is considered ‘early-onset’ cancer or when cancer occurs between the ages of 18 and 49 years.
Studies suggest globally cases have risen 80 percent in the age group in three decades, to 3.26million cases a year in 2019 from 1.82million in 1990.
Countries recording the biggest spikes include Ecuador and Korea, where cases in the age group are rising by an estimated five percent every year according to a review.
In the US, the disease is set to become the biggest cancer killer among under 50s by the year 2030 researchers suggest.
It is already the number one cause of cancer deaths in men and the number two cause in women. In the late 1990s, it was the fourth biggest killer.
At the same time, rates of the cancer among older adults — for whom it is much more common — are continuing to fall.
Joe Biden will target super rich and corporate America in tonight’s State of the Union address with sweeping tax rises to include hiking minimum corporate tax from 21% to 25% and a minimum 25% tax for billionaires.
White House officials said Biden would preview the steps that will be part of a proposed fiscal 2025 budget released next week that aims to cut the federal deficit by $3 trillion while cutting taxes for low-income Americans :
