In a sober essay, he warned that the United States is not prepared to withstand nuclear or electromagnetic pulse attacks

Newt is speaking outside of his area of competence here. The EMP threat is way overstated. Widspread outages from EMP require a number of large nuclear weapons. We already have a doctrine for that. It's called total nuclear annihilation.

The problem is that there is a growing group of inside the Beltway grifters who are lobbying for lots and lots of money to fund their foundations and businesses to study the problem.

It's hard to imagine. Deepstate grifters hyping an issue they actually lack the technical knowledge to undestand or do anything abourt to get into the taxpayers pocket and buy themselves a nice mansion in Potomac Md or McClean Va.

America has been robbed blind by armies of these people. And note that none of them actually have companies that produce hardware. The MIC is a actually a misnomer these days. Sure there are the LMs and Northorp Grumans and General Dynamics who, however scheming and bureaucratic and inefficient and exorbatnly expensive actually produce real hardware that eventually is made to work. But there are legions of folks who have nothing to do with them who produce nothing but white papers and powerpoint decks at high rates of pay, channeling a percentage back through lobbyists to their fellow swampgrifters.

“”Newt is speaking outside of his area of competence here. The EMP threat is way overstated.””

I respectfully disagree; both about Newt’s area of competence and overstating EMP. He had to understand what it was about long before he wrote the Foreward to Forstchen’s book “One Second After.” Sure, it’s fiction but can anyone honestly say or believe it CAN’T HAPPEN HERE?

I believe Putin is well on his way to having an EMP weapon against the United States in light of his recent blatherings. I don’t believe anyone is prepared for such “widespread outages” as you mentioned. People went nuts a few days ago when their cell phones stopped working..imagine a larger scale of “outages” involving every aspect of our daily lives.

I can live without a cell phone and I do but I don’t want to be without Free Republic.....
