ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — On Thursday, HGTV will pick the winner of its 2024 Dream Home in Anastasia Island. But when the winner is picked, they might be in for a rude awakening.
Some hoping for the ‘dream home’ say the situation seems more like a nightmare.
“You’d think they’d have everything in order before building something like that,” says Rebecca Rexrode, who entered 45 times for the chance to win the home.
It doesn’t sound too dreamy, either, to Beth Uhl, who’s tried for the HGTV Dream Home each year for at least the last decade.
“So you get a home, but you get a home with problems,” Uhl said.
Drawings for the house were approved by the city last year, but now the city’s planning and zoning board is asking how that ever happened.
Board members brought up two parts of the development, apart from the seawall, specifically causing concern. The construction plans say the pool area and seawall were drawn up ‘by others,’ but the city doesn’t know exactly who put the plans together.
HGTV says if the winner of the Dream Home doesn’t want it, there’s a $650,000 cash option, instead. The name of the Dream Home winner will be put on HGTV’s website on May 15.

...and once they get the house, they will be also ‘dreaming’ of what they could have done with the Insurance money it will cost to own it.

The insurance is a drop in the bucket compared to the tax bill. If the property is valued at $650k, the federal taxes would be 0.35, or $225k.
Anastasia Island does not need any more buildings.
The whole state does not need any more buildings!
That house is worth way more than $650k.
That figure is what the winner can opt for if they don’t want the house.
I’m guessing the homes value is somewhere north of at least a million.
I Agree!

Probably, but the IRS doesn’t valur property based upon opinion, they would use the cash value offered.
I went to school with a fella that got his arm caught on his lobster boat pully, it. Rushed his arm and he cut the rest of his arm off to save himself, then drove himself back to warf, and went to the hospital. He was given a beautiful house by one of these home giveaway shows, and they bought him a new lobster boat so he could, keep on fishing.
Here is the story if anyone is interested:

Ugggh- meant to type “it crushed his arm” in the pulley-
The fella was a wild one in school- but just learned this year that he is now a pastor- which was shocking but satisfying to hear-
Just move in...homestead. They’ll be there for years before anyone can kick them out.
The whole state does not need any more buildings!
Did Hank Johnson say it was about to tip over? LOL
i find it hard to believe that the depicted house is only 3,300 square feet ...
I dunno.....kinda looks right to me.....remember, no basements in Fla.
