Automatic transmissions suck, as do nearly all new vehicles now. Insanely overcomplicated technology in pursuit of miniscule improvements in efficiency and emissions.

They are literally putting ten times as much into adding junk as the junk will ever save.

Automotive technology peaked in the late 90s or early 00s.

Structurally there are still some gains for collision.

the problem there is they are using “replace only” grades of high strength steel, so the collision repair costs have gone into orbit.

But at least there is some benefit.

The engines are getting more and more fragile and complex and expensive, for fuel economy gains no-one cares about.

“They are literally putting ten times as much into adding junk as the junk will ever save.”

No kidding. TEN SPEED auto transmissions? That is insane. All to chase a 0.1 increase in mpg. And that is all due to the Feral Government and their infernal CAFE standards. We are WAY beyond diminishing returns. Huge increases in capital cost AND maintenance cost to save a few bucks on operating cost. It’s absolutely absurd.

My son’s Jetta had the tranny blow at 90k and it was covered by warranty. The replacement tranny blew a few months back with 130k on the replacement. Nobody will repair them — you just pull it out and drop in a rebuilt for $5,000 - $7,000 which is WAY more than the car is worth.

I must agree fully with your comment.

We have a 2015 Subaru and a 2018 F150. The Subaru is OK, but the Ford just sucks to high heaven in the over done department. I cuss every time I get in it, for some annoying feature will pi$$ me off before we get on the road.

We have a 97 Silverado. What a pleasure to drive. Comfortable, safe, easy to drive and has nearly 200,000 miles on it and uses zero oil. Of the three, this is the one both the wife and I agree is a pleasure to drive. It’s simple and fun.

I agree other than I believe that automobile tech peaked in the seventies not the 90s. When the insurance companies and the three letter agencies started tinkering with the auto industry they killed the automobile and created the transportation pod. You may as well be driving a dishwasher.
