Mahomes would have been flattened in the NFL anytime before the 2010’s
Nah, the "in the grasp" rule was in play in the '80s, and Mahomes is pretty slippery (just as Montana was). As it is, he didn't rely on the pass much (besides one 45 yarder) until the last drives in the late 4th and OT.
Fran Tarkenton was not large, and he wasn't flattened. He also had a good o-line. Pat Haden wasn't flattened until half-way in '79 (in the greatest defensive performance ever, against the Seahawks), and he was REALLY small, and npt all that mobile. He had a GREAT O-line. Fran Tarkenton broke my heart too many times. I followed him from my Giants to the Vikings where he made it to the Super Bowl 3 times and lost all three times. Only to be outdone by Jim Kelly who lost 4 Super Bowls. Whatever the outcome I still had to get up and go to work the next day.
