As a little kid, I had my doubts about parts of this song.

Also, the narrator claims he is Tommy's uncle, and he looks after him, but the song makes it sound like he left him on his own.

Worst song of all time.

Tied with a lot of others.

Also, I read Larry Gatlin claimed the songwriter used his last name to further a grudge.

My favorite part was when Tommy locked the bar door, then said “Now youse can’t leave.”

Oh, wait. Maybe I’m getting a little mixed up here.

Kenny did good for himself and was quite successful. Just not my cup of tea.

I always found that song disturbing. That said, there is a hilarious breakdown here:

Very timely for these days.

Not one of his better songs. “The Gambler” or “I Am the Greatest” were much better, in the story-song genre. Kenny Rogers was an excellent vocalist, very smooth and controlled.

I remember the parody of it by Rob Hart - Chicken of the County being played on the Dr Demento show back then. It seems like it’s been scrubbed from the internet. I finally found it on archive dot org in a radio show someone posted

i like the song... on the album it was misnamed the coward of the country...

the uncle seems to say he watched after tommy not stalk him after he got married... and his first hand knowledge of the battle behind locked bar doors suggests he was there... but not participating in the fight.

and the gatlin boys were a country group, not rivals of kenny... so i take it as a joke...
