I remember a diabetic guy who kept a Hershey bar in his shirt pocket. It kept getting soft. He finally figgered out he was working to close to the microwaves.

Years ago, I worked with another engineer who was a bit older than me. He told the story one day about the time he attended the World's Fair in New York City during high school. One of the exhibits had a long line where attendees were handed a small bag of popcorn seed. He joined the line and once he received his bag, he was pointed to one of the refrigerator-sized metal cabinets. As instructed, he opened the door, placed his bag inside, closed the door, and pushed the "On" button. After several seconds, he fell to the ground and grabbed his chest. He thought he was having a heart attack. It was then he realized the package of flashbulbs in his shirt pocket and used for his camera had exploded. I guess the shielding in the microwave oven lacked in its compliance.

Been there. I think I remember that I95 sign. Some years ago I was northbound on I95 and found myself in a lane over the George Washington. But I didn’t want to cross the bridge. So I asked the toll booth chick if she could help me get back in a north lane. She didn’t know how. So I turned on the Hazards, jumped a couple lane dividers, and got myself and my truck far away from Manhattan. Another hard job for my Guardian Angel, I guess, since 9-11 happened not long after that.

The boss-guy there at the WF probably told the guy when the flash bulbs go off the popcorn is done. And dry popcorn sounds boring. I wonder if the next machine melted the butter? Learning how to use microwaves safely has been a long hard ride. And high school science classes are not yet helping even tho we’re nearly a century into using them.

There’s one of those big toaster ovens tucked inside a giant soccer ball on top of Mt Kaala on Oahu. They always warned us local pilots to give the thing plenty of room. It was above Dillingham, the local glider field, so it was easy to get close to by accident. I remember a couple incidents when light planes got pinholes poked in themselves for sightseeing too close.

I knew a couple of electricians who worked for Western Electric who had the contract to keep the thing operating. They kept their head hair short to keep it from standing up at odd times.
