Well, I have some customers in Buffalo and Cleveland that I’ve been planning to see and have tentatively lined up trips to both locations to take advantage of the trip. At the last minute, I’ll cancel the one that is the most likely for cloud cover...Based on historical data, both are only at odds of 1 in 3 that it will be ‘mostly clear or better’.

Interesting that local media is now warning people to stock up on groceries and fill gas tanks in advance of the eclipse.
What do they expect to happen? What do they know?
Took the entire day off work. Live right in the heart of the viewing zone! Cities around us are planning for the “event.” And I plan to be in Bay Village, Ohio for viewing it over Lake Erie.
Reading about how the birds and insects become quiet during the eclipse.
There’s a reason why the 10th Mountain Division is based at Fort Drum.
Quite often, the clouds go away during deep eclipse and totality and rapidly come back as the eclipse finishes.

I wish I could say that for the eclipse on May 10, 1994 when I was with the family on the shores of Lake Erie....
If you are on the lake, you might get to see the shadow zipping off at about 2k mph.
I had lined up with a large group including an astronomer we know, but the area they’ll be in only has 2 1/2 minutes of totality.
My wife and daughter rebelled. We’re going to another friends place with almost 4 minutes totality.

I can just walk out my door.
For a longer view of totality I can go to my Mom’s old place. :-)
The biggest problem is that in the mid-South, cloudiness in April is likely.
I wish I could say that for the eclipse on May 10, 1994 when I was with the family on the shores of Lake Erie....

Of course, this does not work all the time. When it rains cats and dogs, no eclipse will help.
in 2017, some of my family spend long time looking for the best place. Then, just during the eclipse, a small cloud showed up and destroyed the whole show. Just bad luck!
But, when I observed, in both cases, it rained all night beforehand. The day started with heavy overcast, but, as the partiality progressed, it started to clean up.
I got great skies during the totality, but it started clouding up again pretty soon afterwards!
And, I read a scientific explanation of this effect!
Not that I understood this article, but it has to do something with the sudden drop of the temperature.

Even if you’re not in the path of totality, the solar eclipse on April 8 will offer a show to nearly everyone across North and Central America
This eclipse will occur during a “solar maximum” so the corona should be especially prominent / active.
With a little luck we may even get a large solar flare or Coronal Mass Ejection.
Of course, if we have really bad luck, we’ll get a really powerful CME aimed right at us, and another Carrington Event or worse...
