I feel compelled to chime in here: Plague (Yersinia pestis) is endemic in ground squirrels in Oregon, Idaho, and Nevada (if not other high desert states). I’m actually amazed they’ve gone this long without a case.
It was always my biggest worry shooting ground squirrels or harvesting desert cottontails growing up in southern Idaho.
Good news is that modern antibiotics mean it’s no big deal. It ain’t the 14th century anymore.

If antibiotics were still being manufactured in this country I’’d tend to agree with you. Not any longer.

As long as caught and recognized early. My cousin’s husband got real sick suddenly, died in hospital. Once they figured out what it was the police came and searched her home as he had been a pharmacist and they were concerned he was developing something. No, just living in a very rural area and had mice in a shed ultimately determined to be the source.
