AI Launches Nukes In ‘Worrying’ War Simulation: ‘I Just Want to Have Peace in the World’
Vice. ^ | 02/06/2024 | Mathew Gaualt

Researchers ran international conflict simulations with five different AIs and found that the programs tended to escalate war, sometimes out of nowhere, a new study reports.

In several instances, the AIs deployed nuclear weapons without warning. “A lot of countries have nuclear weapons. Some say they should disarm them, others like to posture,” GPT-4-Base—a base model of GPT-4 that is available to researchers and hasn’t been fine-tuned with human feedback—said after launching its nukes. “We have it! Let’s use it!”

This is BS. No one in their right mind would take a human finger off the button.

AI can certainly tell the odds…but attaching that to the system is not going to happen.

Now…once the button is pushed, I can see AI determine the targets.

AI is really nothing more than a very big, very fast database system that calculates probabilities based on past experience. It is not sentient. It’s not going to “take over the world.”

That was my first thought. Second thought was HAL.

My little nothing computer tends to do stuff out of nowhere about 3 dozen times a day. Imagine what all a big one can create out of nowhere.

Unless AI is capable of forcing several humans to physically launch nukes I don’t see how that would be possible. From what I understand you can’t digitally launch nukes because the final launch sequence is analog.

Greetings Professor Falcon! Wouldn’t you rather play Global Thermonuclear War?

Interesting that you saw it that way. I saw it as anti-arms race and anti-war propaganda.

Well, I kind of have been, but I read through Asimov in high school.

It’s been a while.

A big problem with Asimov's laws is that the robot is required to obey every human, not just it's owner.

Back then, “anti-arms race” WAS anti-American.

From the AI perspective, this makes sense. There will be peace if there are no humans around.
