McQueen had them on the run in that scene. In real life if they had straighter roads that Charger would likely have run away from the 289 up in top end.

I recall that “in real life” the director had the Charger dumbed down and/or the Mustang beefed up. Also, in recreations of Shut Down with competant drivers, the Super Stock Dodge with the 413 beats the fuel injected Corvette Stingray, though it IS a good race.

Superior flow at the (ported?) Heads and hemispheric combustion. Later, couldn’t keep up with small Block Chevys turning 9 grand on the tach, no matter the head flow.
