You can take that view but may I suggest that getting caught blindsided by an annual cost of this amount does not constitute part of the ‘what you can afford’ thinking.

What I want to know is what the car manufacturers are doing about it....who would buy these cars? By the way i have had these discussions with car dealers where I live. I have a few vehicles....all at least a decade old. Insurance and tbeft is one reason I haven’t bought a new vehicle. It’s a separate issue but I also want the option to disconnect all the surveillance stuff they install these days before i buy a new vehicle.....and I’m prepared to wait.

I see you’re getting some grief for this comment, but I agree. If the car weren’t financed, they could drop comprehensive coverage and it would probably be affordable; but obviously they financed (couldn’t afford cash) and are stuck. I pay $29 a month to cover three cars but can only do so because I paid cash for all of them.
