The world's largest cruise ship has begun its seven-day maiden voyage from Port Miami - carrying nearly the population of a small city onboard.

The Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas set sail today on a seven-day island-hopping voyage in the Caribbean before returning to Miami.

The $2 billion ship runs nearly 1,200 feet (365 meters) from bow to stern and has 20 decks, 2,350 crew, 2,805 staterooms along with room for 7,600 passengers.

I spent about a month on the Ike during her shakedown (I think...it was in 1978) our squadron was sent there as attached airing.

While on that mini-deployment, our sister squadron (VA-72) lost a plane over the side on launch due to a catapult malfunction or incorrect setting.

We call that a “cold cat shot”. Basically, there is not enough power to launch the plane for some reason, and the plane leaves the flight deck and goes into the water.

In this case, the pilot ejected, and landed in the water right near the ship which came to a full stop.

The pilot landed in the water when the carrier stopped, we could see the pilot struggling with his parachute cords. A rescue swimmer from a helicopter dropped into the water immediately to help him, but could not disentangle him. The pilot’s head came out of the water, and would disappear, again and again.

The ship put a launch over the side, and they went to assist, but even with the launch there and a rescue swimmer in the water with him, they could not disentangle him, and he kept going under. Finally, after 45 minutes or so of this, they were able to drag his sodden, motionless body into the launch.

This all happened in full view of hundreds of us on the flight deck watching in growing horror.

The last I saw was when they wheeled him through the hangar bay on a gurney, doing CPR, but he was dead, and they could not save him.

They had a professional swimmer in the water, a helo overhead, and a launch with men, all trying frantically to pull him out of the water for nearly and hour, and failed.

Ah- I didn’t realize modern ships didn’t have decks or deck chairs for folks- they should have and make the chairs flotation devises capable of keeping a person afloat should anything happen. Chairs and debri certainly helped some folks escape death-

The initial press release stated: “ It will feature 20 decks, of which 18 will be passenger decks and accommodate a total of 5,610 guests and an international crew of 2,350.”

So, 8,000 people total. Still, they ain’t all going to be in lifeboats if that ship ever goes down.

I fail to see the attraction of spending time with nearly 8,000 strangers on a floating city regardless of how “luxurious” the accommodations and amenities. How is it going to work when the ship enters port and disgorges 8,000 people into some small tropical tourist spot?

It’s got everything from First Class to steerage.

Really?! How are they kept separate? Razor-wire barricades?

Just wait until all 7,000 passengers descend on a small Caribbean island all at once. That one ship is the equivalent of Royal's next two ships combined.

Being on board a ship is somewhat like being in prison with a risk of drowning.

Samuel Johnson once said, “No man will be a sailor who has contrivance enough to get himself into a jail; for being in a ship is being in a jail, with the chance of being drowned.” At another time he claimed, “A man in a jail has more room, better food, and commonly better company.”

The larger the ship, the better the entertainment and food. More to do. It’s cruising on steroids.
