He tried to hold his breath, and previously said he was afraid of dying. I wonder how much of the writhing was more about psychological fear of dying rather than physical pain.

A company I worked for had a classified lab with a cypher lock door. If I recall, there were four people working in the room and it had a line running through it that piped dry nitrogen to another part of the building. This line was leaking and there was insufficient air exchange in the lab to keep the oxygen level up. Everyone in the room succumbed. There were no symptoms to alert them. They were discovered when someone entered the room and realized everyone was on the floor. The point is, there are no symptoms whatsoever. The discomfort we feel in suffocation is the buildup of carbon dioxide. If you’re breathing it out and replacing it with oxygen you won’t know it. There’s is, or was, a suicide kit for sale on the internet that was a small cylinder of nitrogen and a Ziplock bag to go over the head. You attach the nitrogen cylinder to the bag and breathe. They guarantee no symptoms. No discomfort.

I read something about how it was 2 minutes of tugging at the restraints. So perhaps it was 20 minutes of last-minute bureacracy and delays. Strap him in, would you like to...oh wait, we have a call into the Governor,...okay any last words - oh wait....

The son of the preachers wife said that in 2022 they tried to give him a lethal injection. But he had dehydrated himself so they couldn’t find a vein. This time he held his breath for a couple minutes and squirmed - hoping they would cancel this one too.

The record for holding one’s breath is 20 minutes, while staying conscious. Undoubtedly this person who had not trained in a pool could not. He could, however, keep himself conscious for a while, extending the 20s before falling asleep, after which time his body could keep trying to breathe before it gave out. Not that he would be aware of any of that after he lost consciousness, and possibly for a bit before then.

How much of it was that Leninist weirdo spiritual advisor telling him to go for broke?

I’m thinking that excusing a condemned murderer would only encourage others like him to commit crimes they couldn’t be executed for. Is that justice?
