My favorite DLR quote was about the 80s.....”The Music smiled, The clothes smiled, and the people smiled.”
Compare and contrast with today.

True.....then grunge and the Seattle scene hit. Nirvana and instead of singing about sex drugs and rock n roll in flashy outfits......the scene went to how F’ed up life is and Kurt Cobain in torn jeans and an old sweater. It’s quite a story because they could play the guitar as good.....but a whole different message and look. Interesting to read about.
Mine was: "Most rock critics like Elvis Costello because most rock critics look like Elvis Costello."
Another classic, to a fan in the audience: "Don't stick your tongue out at me unless you aim to use it!"
And the legendary story of why Roth always put a clause in contracts with concert venues requiring a bowl of M&M's to be placed in Van Halen's dressing room with all of the brown ones removed: critics thought that was a typical example of rock royalty excess, but the real reason was that if he found brown M&M's in the bowl when he arrived he knew the promoter had not read the contract - and he would immediately order a line check of the whole production to make sure everything had actually been set up to the band's specifications.
Not at all the dumb character he often played on stage. :)
