Years ago, some machine maintenance software I had written for a government agency was being reviewed for section 508 compliance. The reviewer complained that my menus were not speech-activated. I said that no blind person would ever use the system. She said “if your menus were speech-enabled, then a blind person could use the system.” I then showed her the part that said “when resetting the circuit board XYZ in the lower cabinet, take care not to come in contact with the high voltage line.” I asked her if she thought a blind person could do that. She couldn’t think of anything to say.

With the DoD for 31 years I had two experiences that stood out in proving the idiocy of the federal government.

1. The IT security guy that had to SEE me and my government ID to grant me permissions to access the facility network was legally blind.

2. Strict policy stated that anyone in shop floor work areas must at a minimum wear ear plugs for hearing protection........even the totally deaf machinist. 🤷
