Was interviewing potential legal assistants 5 years ago. Every one of the Gen Z’ers used the “I’m a sponge” line - as in “I soak up all the learning you can give”. The problem is, none of them could wring out the learning from the sponge. One of them had a letter of recommendation from a professor saying what a hard worker she was. Notsomuch...’”
Legal assistants HAVE to be a sponge. The job is not just repetitive tasks since every new case is so different. They also have to be willing to work late when a big trial is coming up, know to keep their mouth shut and not to discuss cases or clients with others, and be a bit of a counselor when the sobbing or irate client is upset with the progress of a case. A resume is not always a good indication of the best candidate.
Gen Z grads no good then hire a Millennial....
A Millennial Job Interview 2017

She is currently doing three jobs: VP of finance, Budget Specialist and Controller. Her employer has to do an annual audit and she got dinged for having three jobs, they wanted more controls, but did praise her for her efforts at putting in what controls she has considering the situation. All she could do is show them where she has tried to hire, and tried to institute safeguards. The auditors told her they were seeing this more and more as companies they audit couldn’t find qualified people to work in certain positions.
The auditors themselves said they were running into college graduates who flat out told them they didn’t care about crunch times and audits that had deadlines, they were working their 7.5 hrs and going home and not traveling, so they are having trouble filling positions.
Our kids are 33 to 37 now and all have a good work ethic. So glad they are not in this current spoiled generation.
The employees at Costco definitely have a good work ethic. They wouldn’t last if they didn’t. The customers seem to be responsible too. They return their shopping carts at a high rate, much higher rate than at Walmart.
Re: Shopping carts. I was telling my daughter there are three types of people.
Those that leave their carts at the curb in the parking lot.
Those that return their carts to the stall.
Those that take the cart from the curb and return it along with their own, and organize the stall a bit too.
That idea of 3 types of people applies to most things.
Mine are in their 20’s. They have always had to work. You want to drive, you have to work. I pay for the gas or the insurance, but you have to pay for one of the two, pick one. They got hand me down cars.
My oldest son decided to pay for the gas and within a week I started hearing him complain about gas prices going up, he watched the gas signs like a hawk. I said welcome to the party! My daughter chose the insurance route and paid it faithfully. She even made enough money to buy her a used vehicle and she made the payments and bought the gas and I paid the insurance. My youngest on his first paycheck had it figured up to the penny and was angry when it wasn’t what he thought it should be and I pointed out the taxes taken out and he said that’s not fair, I worked for this money! Again, welcome to the party!
Great job, Dad! That’s the way to teach them about the world.
It’s often said kids are Democrats until the first real paycheck arrives and they see how big the government take is. Yours are learning that lesson.
