Thingumspouse and I just bought 2 lots in a subdivision for that very reason.. The second lot was an investment and also to control who at least one of our future neighbors will be.

When we retire we want to control our spending on such things. We’d rather not pay for the neighborhood pool, pool house, golf course etc. We don’t want to permanently attach those expenses to our property through an HOA instead we’ll join a club outside the subdivision and leave if we don’t want to pay anymore.

End of slide.
