The study summarized a lot of studies and threw out most of them, ad then based their estimate by extrapolating the numbers from small study.
Some studies showed it worked.
anti virals have to be given early or they don't work.
And one study in Brazil gave larger doses to very sick people and larger doses can cause toxicity.

Two more recently published (matched-control) studies (2023), one from Brazil, one from Belgium. The study from Brazil does not find any positive effect of HCQ whereas the Belgian study finds a reduction in mortality risk by 57%.

However, concerning the point made in the article that initiated this thread none of the studies found an increased mortality in Covid-19 patients given HCQ!
