I’d love to have a new thyroid, but not at the cost of anyone dying in the womb.
That’s where this is headed, pluripotent stem cells from tissue matched fetuses to regrow/supplement any organ.
Count me out.
I suspect that the thyroid cells taken from the fetus reported by ToT did not destroy it, but were used to enable the mother to carry the baby to term. A very tiny amount of tissue could be removed from the fetus with needle aspiration without causing harm that could not be repaired as the fetus continued to grow.
Not long ago I Googled asking what percent of newborns had gender anomalies. The figure was as many as 2% with such measures as XXY, YYX, and other peculiarities, some of which are never noticed in the newborn child. Thus the immediately recognized features are far lower than this 2% figure. However as children mature, and hormone levels change, who knows what feelings may emerge. This is a field requiring a lot more research. Meanwhile if you feel extremely upset by the current surge in interest in this understudied branch of sexual science, consider the possibility that you have hormones that may be causing uncomfortable feelings and strong reactions to these stories. Then undertake to learn more with the help of Google and other searches. Don’t take out your feelings on families that are already dealing with upsetting feelings and information, or lack thereof.
However, I would strongly suggest that no surgeries on minors be considered unless serious laboratory analysis of the childs underlying sexual/hormonal status has been thoroughly examined. Also, serious evaluation of the long term effect of any surgeries or hormonal treatments should be done as well. Meanwhile, love the child and accept that they have these feelings, at least for the moment, until in depth medical and psychological evaluations have been done.
