Time was, that State Legislatures SELECTED united states senators and a lot of folks (myself included) think it was a bad mistake to go to popular vote to pick these people...
I think we would have liked the outcome of the 2020 election better if the State Legislatures and Governors had been the ones doing the deciding up front and out in the open. You know, like a REPUBLIC operates and not the mob rule of “democracy”.
Those state legislatures were still elected. I din’t think that is what Behar was getting at. More likely, she doesn’t want ‘other people’ to have a voice.
Even today, Article II of the U.S. Constitution does not dictate (although it allows) that citizens of the several states are to vote for presidential Electors. A given state could, if it so choose, provide that its Electors be determined by, say, a throw of the dice.
Personally, I think replacing popular elections with random lottery selections has a lot to recommend it. At least for members of Congress.
