Doug knocked out 2 or three in a weekend. It’s called competence. Actually learning how to paint helps. That means spending years painting, not listening to lectures by failed painters.
Normal-size oil paintings? that's pretty good.
But I'm not arguing those points - yes, there are certainly going to be people like Doug with skill and experience to support themselves through art. But the majority of today's "artists" can't do it, and those make up the majority of my comments. And I would bet Doug had to work some others jobs to support himself for several years before he became good enough and had enough network to start doing art only.

Absolutely. It is hard work. If an artist isn’t willing to put in the work then it’s just too bad. Maybe they have more aptitude to be fry cooks instead.
