Kill excellence in order to achieve equity. Lowest common denominator. I saw it when I worked for government. I had the biggest caseload and was hated for it.
It happens in retail, too. Years ago, I worked in retail. They gave nice incentives for pretty much doing your job. As soon as they set a specific monthly goal, I would meet it and then be rewarded. My store would have several incentives going on at the same time. Pretty soon, I was winning all the extras, but really, I just did my job. I wasn’t a slacker. After a while, they got rid of the incentives, because I was often the only one winning them. So they just stopped them altogether.
