Fascinating comment.

According to Luttwak (Strategy: The Logic of War and Peace), the front line (mostly U.S. & U.K.) facing the USSR was intended to hold just long enough (a few days?) to allow tactical nukes to be deployed by America, but not long enough for the Euros to surrender.

After the first Gulf War there were a LOT of Soviet Army officers glad they never had to face Germans, on the defensive, in their own country, while armed with American weapons.

The professionals knew that their hardware wasn't as good as ours, that their troops weren't trained as well, and wouldn't as motivated.
