Taylor Swift is telling me a story, and when Taylor Swift tells you a story, you listen, because you know it’s going to be good—not only because she’s had an extraordinary life, but because she’s an extraordinary storyteller. This one is about a time she got her heart broken, although not in the way you might expect. She was 17, she says, and she had booked the biggest opportunity of her life so far—a highly coveted slot opening for country superstar Kenny Chesney on tour. “This was going to change my career,” she remembers. “I was so excited.” But a couple weeks later, Swift arrived home to find her mother Andrea sitting on the front steps of their house. “She was weeping,” Swift says. “Her head was in her hands as if there had been a family emergency.” Through sobs, Andrea told her daughter that Chesney’s tour had been sponsored by a beer company. Taylor was too young to join. “I was devastated,” Swift says. But some months later, at Swift’s 18th birthday party, she saw Chesney’s promoter. He handed her a card from Chesney that read, as Swift recalls, “I’m sorry that you couldn’t come on the tour, so I wanted to make it up to you.” With the note was a check. “It was for more money than I’d ever seen in my life,” Swift says. “I was able to pay my band bonuses. I was able to pay for my tour buses. I was able to fuel my dreams.” Photograph by Inez and Vinoodh for TIME Listening to Swift share this, on a clear fall afternoon in her New York City apartment, I’m struck by how satisfying the story is.

The good news is that little white girls finally have an idol and roll model who “looks like” them.
I can recall when the Beatles had a huge impact on popular culture in America and around the world.
The Beatles helped redefine popular music and popular culture.
But back in those days The Beatles would never have been considered for the Time Magazine Man of a year award.
I think the criteria for this man of the year person of the year award have clearly changed.
She’s owned by the Marxist left. This is just to give her clout, as she campaigns for their cause throughout 2024.
Elon Musk should have been it.
She has so much wealth none of the ruin and misery Biden and the rats cause will affect her in the slightest. It is sickening disconnect from the reality of what of the country is going through and she will these evil pricks stay in power at every opportunity. There is an army of voting age girls she will mobilize.
Bread and circuses. Keep the masses mollified as the nation disintegrates. There’s even an NFL connection with the boyfriend and her the hottest topic in the news. The Kardashians must be fuming as nobody cares about them anymore.
Time is not a magazine. It is now more of a pamphlet.
I thought for sure this would have been from the Bee.
> Elon Musk should have been it. <
That rang a bell, so I looked it up. Musk was Time’s pick in 2021.
So I guess they occasionally get it right.
“”All I can say is that I don’t understand the Taylor Swift phenomenon. It’s the madness of crowds. I don’t hear anything interesting in her music — but I’m hardly the right demographic for it.””
You’ve said it better than I could. I never understood the excitement over Madonna either. For kicks, I looked up this woman singing anything and it’s nothing but a bunch of noise IMO. This is being discussed on the radio now - pro and con. The host is suggesting that Elon Musk should have been named TIME person of the year - I agree.
I entertain myself with music from the ‘60’s/’70’s every day listening to very old records/CD’s/or on the computer...I can understand every word.
Recently my daughter mentioned that I ALLOWED her to listen to Madonna records when she was a teenager and she was surprised. I told her I couldn’t understand a word she was singing so HOW could I object? Same with this person.
America’s 2023 “Man of the Year” is a dumb blonde female. Perfect.
Kelce is more deserving of this
She’s NOT Donald Trump and NOT Xavier Milei. Therefore, eligible.
Madonna is more original than Taylor Swift.
Is she a liberal idiot, politically speaking?
If she is a liberal tool, I guess we’ll see if she gets used in the coming year with the presidential election.
Well, when you look at some of the people who Time has given that “honor” to int he past…
She couldn’t even comb her hair for the photo. My 5 year old grandaughter can do that.
Yeah.....her hair looks horrible......the new trend.
**Kelce is more deserving of this**
Samson fell into stupid way before mister Kelce did.
