Yet, it was a man of the South, Jackson, a Small Government Conservatice, who would have crushed treason in it’s cradle. I believe it was Jackson who said:
"John Calhoun, if you secede from my nation, I will secede your head from the rest of your body."
And it wasn't treason. The nation was founded on the principle of self determination, and every state had a right to leave.
