One of my favorite movies. I'm just of world news. Extended lunch and it came on. Excellent movie. They wasted like 8 Mustangs.

I don’t know. The GTO was in the chase quite a few times also! lol

“The bad guy’s shotgun is a US ordnance marked Winchester 1897.”
Is that why he is using those “low brass” shells?

Yep the big block mopar is one of my favorite sounds. McQueen’s racing experience comes through too. Notice he always double clutches the Mustang?

McQueen drives like a grandma. The guy driving the Beetle is better.

"I love the sound of a V8. As good as the 390 sounded that 440 wedge had a sound all it’s own. Best part of the movie."They dubbed in the sound of a GT40 for the Mustang, right down to the stutter of the driver double clutching the shifts.

I've heard the "dubbed GT40 sounds" speculation before, but I suspect it's not true. The GT40 Mk2 with the Le Mans-spec 427 (nearest to the Mustang's 390) had a much more aggressive camshaft as well as the distinctive 180 degree tuned ("bundle of snakes") headers. The result sounded like what it was, a high-revving, unmuffled race engine. Lots of exhaust crackle is evident, but neither the high revs nor the unique exhaust sounds come through in the movie chase scene. IMO, the '68 Mustang sounds like a warmed-up 390 with glasspack mufflers, driven and shifted by someone with period road-race experience... and that could include McQueen or the other stunt drivers. Steve drove Jags and Porsches of the era; he knew how to heel-and-toe.
IIRC, Chad McQueen has said that stock car (Winston Cup / NASCAR) engine sounds were added, but wasn't sure about the details. He was around age 10 when the movie was made, so, grain of salt.

Steve McQueen started out on TV. First check out the gun, then check out the babes.

Those RPM’s were a bit high for a 390.
