Actually, I think very few (Americans) have any idea.
I have a friend who is Muslim - haven’t seen him in years - in bad times, very bad times, he bought some stuff from me to help me out financially (I gave him a good deal on my garden tractor)
STILL, I quoted Islamic writings to him - he said it’s not in the Koran
I said, no it’s not - it’s in the hadiths
I wrote down chapter and verse, from memory, of multiple passages - invited him to examine any Islamic source
He came back shocked the next week - told me that it said exactly what I said it said
He couldn’t believe it - he was in his 50’s - been a Muslim his whole life - had no idea

Trust me, after 911 EVERYONE knew.
