Astute observation, Melian. Grief isn’t a competition, and a loss can be felt profoundly, depending on the attachment a person has to what’s been lost and the reasons for the attachment. I’ve lost people I barely shed a tear for, and an earring that bugged me for months (I reference the reason for what seems to be a frivolous attachment). The pain of the loss of a job, dream, health, relationship, person, pet, object or home are worse for some than others, and all have varying degrees of pain for the one experiencing the loss. And I always try to remember that all losses can be worse, per the ancient proverb, “I was unhappy about having no shoes, until I met the man who had no feet.”
