Most modern gas appliances have electronic ignition. Pilot light ignition is being phased out thanks to the government demands for efficiency.
Depending on the appliance, some will work ... our gas fireplace works without electricity, and we can light the top burners on our stove. Furnace, tankless water heater & oven are a no-go.
When the electric went out last winter (more than once, as failed redundant systems in our area are not being upgraded) we all piled into our living room and were plenty warm & fed.
If we were forced to go to all-electric (and add in a “mandated” EV as well), there is NO way our aging home could handle the increased demand.
My sister and several friends have heat pumps. It is never warm enough in their homes (IMO), even on relatively mild winter days. Extra socks or slippers, a warm sweater or sweatshirt and a blanket for over your legs helps some, but it is extremely unpleasant to wander away from whatever nest you’ve made. My sister admits she’s cold much of the time from late Fall to Spring, but it used to it now.
