Gates bought up an operating system made by a company in Seattle that IBM needed.
IBM probably would have directly bought up the operating system but was afraid of US government power.
I remember Microsoft bought a clone system from Seattle Computer Products which was adapted for IBM, but the copyright issue with Digital Research was an entirely separate issue.
And Gates' mom knew the CEO of IBM from charity work. That didn't hurt either.
