An industrial robot brutally slaughtered a South Korean robotics technician Tuesday, allegedly mistaking him for just another container of organic material in need of stacking.
The victim, a man in his 40s, was attempting to diagnose an issue with a pick-and-place robot's sensor at the Donggoseong Export Agricultural Complex in the southern county of Goseong, as there was an equipment test planned for later in the week, reported the Register.
The paprika-sorting robot, reportedly created and installed by the victim's employer, spotted the man with its sensor, figured him for a box of vegetables, then seized him using its arms and tongs. After grabbing the technician, the robot apparently smashed him against a conveyor belt.
According to the Korean-language Yonhap News Agency, the victim's face and chest were crushed. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

They should probably adjust the settings for “placing” the container on the belt while they are at it.
I would suggest “lock-out, tag-out” too, but sometimes that is difficult to do when trying to diagnose a problem.

Only works until a manager comes along and thinks he is smarter than the operator who tagged it.
See it too many times.
They should probably have employed some appropriately configured collision detection on that robot.
The worst I’ve ever seen was in a video where the operator of an engine lathe (metal) leaned in too close to the spinning chuck and workpiece. It wasn’t pretty and no Hollywood special effects could’ve made it seem so gruesome. Industrial accidents are some of the worst you’ll ever see or hear about, and having even a close call with one can be traumatic.
There need to be a few emergency “OFF BUTTONS” on the robot. Kind of like pulling the electrical plug on a computer.

Normally when working within a robot’s work zone, the technician would use what is called a “dead man’s” switch, which is a type of switch that the operator must press and hold at an intermediate position between fully released and fully pressed to allow robot movement.
As intended.
Slaughtering a box of paprika is just wrong!
He had failed to lock it out and the crane operator, who was moving a pallet of steel panels, couldn't see him because he was obscured by a stamping press.
In other news, several large stacks of Koreans were unharmed.
Knew a man who was killed by elevator while working in the shaft. The story I heard was that he was told that the power was off. It was not.
Legal question...who is responsible for this man’s death. Inventor, designer, builder, programmer, installer, maintenance, or deceased himself?
Correction; who is responsible for this South Korean man’s death?
Was the robot fired for murdering a co-worker?
