The initial claims about "nuclear winter" were nonsense since the models assumed an earth without oceans.

Besides, do the "nuclear winter" models also factor in all the CO2 released by fires? Won't that contribute to warming?/s

There's a wide variety of possibilities but since the equilibria of big systems are difficult to disturb, it's unlikely that the effects on climate would be more than temporary.

Unlike the effects due to blast damage and radiation on the human population.

“...yet Hiroshima and Nagasaki are repopulated...”

He’s not talking about the immediate area or the size of the devises except to say they are contributory to the change in the original intent with expansion.

With much larger devises and amounts of them it will cause an after effect of the basically same theory of the destruction of the dinosaurs with atmospheric reaction of sun coverage and within a certain distance alpha radiation that will cause animals to die after enough exposure. The marker is around 200 rads.

But he also is failing at the peacetime uses of nuclear and so his talk is so one sided combination chicken little and peace nick it wastes the time of anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of nuclear utilization. Watch it if you want, but it doesn’t really bring something into focus most of the citizens didn’t already learn from K through 6 textbooks.

TED talks strike me as yet another forum in which our narcissistic, half-educated elites can form a big circle jerk and congratulate themselves on how clever they are while enjoying the frisson of catastrophism. They can also assure themselves that they are the Top Men fighting to avert this catastrophe, when in fact they are enriching themselves and screwing the rest of us.

Never found TED talks to be worth the time they take to watch them. This one is good example of why.

Is he suggesting that Mars is baren because of nuclear war?

A guy named Dr. John Brandenburg thinks so, and has written a book on the topic.

Dr. Brandenburg was also a regular guest on "Ancient Aliens".

Draw your own conclusions ...

See, you’re already totally buying into it. What’s Iran going to do? What has Iran ever done previously except talk? They don’t have a nuclear weapon. Xi, Putin and Trump are going to control this.

This. Research information for yourself, and make your decisions based upon data - not 'experts'.

I can actually imagine them using tactical nuclear weapons. They really aren’t the horror people think they are. They’re just really big bombs. They do carry a radioactive component. But it’s nowhere near as serious as many fear it is.
But I sincerely hope everybody doesn’t have to find out the hard way.

I have no problem with warnings about volcanos and nukes causing climate change. Cow farts - not so much.
