“Deus ex machina” is a Latin term that literally translates to “god from the machine.” The phrase originates from ancient Greek theater. When the plot of a play reached a point where the complications seemed insurmountable, a god (or “deus”) was often introduced into the narrative to resolve the issues and bring the story to a conclusion. This god character would typically be lowered onto the stage using a crane or some sort of mechanical device, hence the “ex machina” (from the machine) portion of the term.”
