There are problems with trying to translate the English term Marine because “marine” means sailor or navy in romance languages. In Spanish for example, they use the term “infanterÃa de marina”, literally naval infantry. We don’t have that problem in English because we can use both “Marines” and “sailors” to distinguish between the forces.
Thanks...I get it. In boot camp were learned the the USMC was modeled after the British Royal Marines.
I don’t remember ever being told how the term Marine was derived.
Slightly off-topic, but the one that tickles me is the Chinese “Peoples Liberation Army Navy”, which would mean that their Marine equivalent would be the “Peoples Liberation Army Naval Infantry”? Or the “Peoples Liberation Army Navy Army” ...
