How close was the guy’s phone. They could be using the phone as a messaging conduit, with the final link to the hearing aid via bluetooth.
I have to say, if I got a hearing aid and started hearing voices, that thing would be on the workbench downstairs already, being smashed by a hammer.
The people that I know, use their phones to adjust the volume or set the “mode” (crowd, quiet, home, etc.).
How far away is your phone from you?
Mine is about 3feet away.

I’d have pulled them out of his ears the minute he said that he was hearing things without receiving a phone call.
