Jews properly are only the members of the tribe of Judah, to which was added the tribe of Benjamin after the split of the kingdom.

I'm just wondering, because radical blacks argue that they were known as Hebrews, which I don't think is the case.

Even if you accept this statement as fact, you have to ask; which blacks?

All blacks could not possibly be known as Hebrews. Africa being a continent with thousands of tribes with at least hundreds of different languages, many of these tribes thousands of miles away from Israel could not possibly have been even remotely familiar with the word Hebrew.

It is farcical to even consider this statement to be factual to all blacks.

The whole subject of names, locations and languages is most interesting in histrorical context.

It becomes amusing that "radical blacks argue that they were known as Hebrews," in part because the Islamic tradition offers a "coloring" on the whole subject:

The Islamic tradition contains many descriptions of the prophet, including of his hair, beard, and particularly skin color. It is very insistent that he was extremely white of complexion.

Ahmad ibn Abi Sulayman, the companion of Sahnun said, “Anyone who says that the Prophet was black should be killed."

Source: "Qur'an, Hadith and Scholars: Muhammad's White Complexion

Source URL: https://wikiislam.net/wiki/Qur%27an,_Hadith_and_Scholars:Muhammad%27s_White_Complexion

One can find MANY other sources for the Hadiths and all which insist that 1) Mohammed has a light complexion, and ) the official death penalty for denying Mohammed's "whiteness" is death.

Ah, the internet.... Ibn Musa al-Yahsubi, Qadi ‘Iyad, p.375

As to Abram becoming Abraham, Hebrew seems the language descriptor, since it is not a name for an area as spoken of in that time, until our Jacob wrestles with the angel to be renamed IsraEl.

Ever notice that all those names ending "el" like Michael and Daniel are names ending in the "short" for God? Language tells much through its etymology and history.

So those Black Hebrews are in deep trouble.... Racists, anti-Semites and with a history constructed from whole cloth. White supremacy of the Mohammedan sort should have a field day with these folks. As would Jews.

Tom Lehrer's song lyric will need revision, like the Black Hebrews have revised much.

It’s irrelevant

After what Hamas did any nation has a natural right to fight back

It’s nice to know the context of the Middle East and folks here are poorly informed as a rule

But honestly that ship has sailed right now

Jews were divides into tribes, descended from the sons of Jacob. Those that lived in the northern part of land, called themselves Hebrew, the two tribes in the southern sector were called Jews after Judah. The northern tribes were much less strict about their religion and eventually accepted the culture and religion of the people who governed the area. The Jews to South ( where Israel is today, were much more orthodox.

I looked this up yesterday.

Only Jacob's descendants are Israelites.

Abraham and his descendants were Hebrews because Abraham descended from Eber.

But Eber had other descendants, who are therefore Hebrew, yet not Israelite or Jewish.

And Abraham and Issac also had descendants who are Hebrew, but not Israelite or Jewish.

But in modern usage, the term Hebrew is used to mean ethnically Jewish.

As I understand it Judaism is the religion, Hebrew is the language and Israel is the state.

The first mention of “Hebrew” I could find in the Bible is in Genesis 14:13, referring to Abram, Abraham’s original name.

Genesis (ESV) 13 Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, who was living by the oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and of Aner. These were allies of Abram.

Wandering Nabateans/Amorites were somewhere in the genealogy.

“Abram was a Chaldean from Ur...................”

This is why I thought the Jews were originally from Mesopotamia, and so are not indigenous to what is now Palestine and Israel. But genetics apparently proves otherwise. I’m puzzled.

Don’t forget, Arabs are descended from Abraham through Ishmael, so they are Semitic as well..............

Read this section of Genesis.

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+11%3A31-12%3A7&version=ESV

Abram was born in Ur, but God called him to a new land, which is now in the vicinity of Israel.

Abram was already considered a Hebrew at this time, as mentioned in Genesis 14:13.

Many Biblical scholars say this is derived from one of his ancestors name’s: Eber (Genesis 10:21). Note, that many people groups have multiple names to describe themselves, for example: Celtic, Irish or Scot, or by family surname. Abraham was born in Ur and was a descendant of the Eber family line.

The question about who is “indigenous” to Israel begs the question of how long must a people group live in an area to be considered “indigenous.” Abraham was there over 4000 years ago.

I looked up “Semitic” and found this:
“Main peoples of Semitic origin: Acadians, Chaldeans, Babylonians, Assyrians, Amorreus, Arameans, Phoenicians, Arabs, Hebrews, Jews, Samaritans, Nabataeans, Syrians, Hyksos, Egyptians, Ethiopians and Ugaritic.”

So it’s obviously a very broad term.

Jews obviously have a very strong historical right to the area now occupied by Israel, and the genetic evidence strengthens that right. I’m wondering if Abraham’s ancestors perhaps came from what is now Israel - that would explain the genetic evidence, and could also explain why God called him there - to return to his ancestral home.

I looked up the definition of “indigenous” and found this: “inhabiting or existing in a land from the earliest times or from before the arrival of colonists.”
Perhaps I’m being over-sensitive, but I see a racial - anti-white - connotation here. To take an example: America. It was populated in waves: initially from Asia, and subsequently from Europe. But the dividing line between indigenous and colonist is not between the first wave from Asia and all subsequent waves (irrespective of whether from Asia or Europe), but between the Asian waves and the European waves - in other words, based on race.

Well, the Biblical account is clear that Abraham was born in Ur, as were his people. Eventually Abraham’s descendants, the Israelites, under Joshua’s leadership, displaced a group of people, collectively called the Canaanites, from Israel under God’s command.

Who knows if the Canaanites were the first to inhabit that land. I highly doubt it. There was a major ancient trade route that ran followed the lush fertile crescent from near Ur to around Israel.

That trade route is interesting. There was likely a mixing of genes, whether through inter-marriage or migration of people.
