Is an AR-15 Sig Series 400 with 30-round clips of 5.56 NATO, better than a 12-gauge for home defense in the U.S. against the kinds of attacks we saw in Israel?

Having an argument with the wife, she doesn't want to spend the extra money. Anywhere from $1,000 on up.

A shotgun is going be useful up close and personal but the farther your targets are away the less effective it will be. Ideally you don’t want them getting close to you so I think a rifle would be a good addition.

Might want to start with human density where you live. Are you in the middle unit of an apartment building that shares walls, ceiling, and floors with other units, or out in the middle of BFE with no neighbors? Rounds that exit the perimeter of you home are quite the liability. (Rule #4)

And then you can reload a mag with a clip, like with my Mosin Nagant rifles. 5-round stripper clip feeds right into the fixed mag.

People, and especially newbies, should forget the word “clip” exists and just use “mag”. They will almost always be right.

There’s always one on every thread. You should go and do some of those really difficult anatomically-challenging exercises. I think you need the practice.

What worries me about shotguns indoors is hearing damage.

Ha...if you are in a firefight, you'll never hear the blast. Auditory exclusion is a real thing. Yeah, you'll have hearing damage, but will only realize it after the adrenalin rush from near death subsides (unless you go into shock).

You'll probably notice the crap in your pants before you notice ears ringing....and any one that's been in a firefight and hasn't personally experience "blowing of the ballast" of themselves or their buddies is lying to you.

Dark house..
Short distance.
Under extreme stress..
Everybody moving.

having not gone to the range near enough lately..

a .22 diameter bullet or A bunch of buck shot pellets?

Personally. I opt for the buck shot. Hoping the spread compensates for my lack of dexterity and focus under those conditions. Hope at least one or two hit with the first shot. And also hope I dont pee myself.

No expert but

If I knew I had to repel multiple targets at range, I would want the AR

If I knew I had target in close range (in my house) I would grab a shotgun.

Weapons like shotguns and many lever actions can be reloaded on the run. That is, after firing, you can always pop in a round or two into the tubular magazine.

Detachable magazines are generally emptied, removed, and a loaded mag inserted. Unless you are adept enough to count rounds expended, your empty mag may occur at an inopportune time. If you change mags before emptying, you are kinda wasting rounds.

If you happen to live in a state where you may not have a button release on your magazine, your reloading will be slower.

There will be critics of what I say. I am not anti mag. There are benefits and losses to both.

Uh oh. Clips vs. mags. You’ll upset the Bang List gods.

Damn right I'm upset! 😁

AMEN! Hell they could drive armor across the border before Biden would react! But I see a good chance of teams coming over and striking soft targets (like a grade school) and taking hostages

I prefer a 12 gauge for close quarters urban situations. I got my home defense 12 gauge while living in the city, and i was thankful i did when ANTIFA and BLM started their crap. We had them march into our apartment complex. I was outside with my 12 gauge, laded with 00 buckshot. If i had to shoot into the crowd, each shot would have dropped several

An AR is a great weapon, i have one. But it usually takes several rounds to ensure a person is fully incapacitated or dead, hence why our military tends to place 3.

Now, with all that said, i may replace my 12 gauge with a newer Mossberg 590M, and purchase a number of mags for it. Far faster reloads.

Remember, a 12 gauge can sweep a hallway clear.

Points of clarification:

- At home defense ranges with defensive ammo (e.g., 00 buck) a shotgun is not an ‘area weapon.’ Typical spread is very small; perhaps 2-3” at 10 yards (I suppose one could buy super-cruddy buckshot and a tiny, open cylinder gun and open it up, but for home defense, that’s just asking for a problem). Only on TV does the shotgun magically wound anything it’s pointed near.

- Noise wise, anecdotally the AR is louder; but anything from a .32 ACP up is loud enough to cause hearing damage.

You need both

One is better for distance, one is better for close encounters.

Look for a Circuit Judge. I love mine. It can do both jobs.

Worrying about it when they kick in your door is FAR too late...

Yep. Practice dry runs (with empty weapons) securing your house. Some of us have children and have to do retreival drills. Practice commo plans with the family. Ours is basically: me grab the guns, wife gets on phone and tells 911 what I look like (fat naked high and tight 50 year old with suppressed AR 15/ shotty with blood splatters all over him and hot librarian looking wife with Wilson Combat AR15 providing overwatch) so I don't get shot by responding young adrenalin junkie officers on night shift.

Also, practice clearing home at night with and without flashlight. That chair you sat in earlier before going to bed, could it hide a 120lbs meth head or gang banger?

Gotta practice and go over it with family. Oh....and put the shades down before you do or else neighbors could freak out.

I would gently suggest that a .308 battle rifle is not the optimal defensive choice for your average person.
