Whenever I hear or read someone use the word (?) “themself” it’s like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Yeah, I used to have to teach that crap and always counselled my students to use their talents to write around the BS, saying what they wanted while not setting off the PC police. Dunno if it worked.
I’m at a stage of my career now where I really don’t give a shiite and don’t have editors to please. It’s much more pleasant and I can rag on the BS at the same time.
