1404: Restoring the Looking Glass
After 6 years and more than 32,000 volunteer hours, the Boeing EC-135 “Looking Glass” has been restored to its former glory. At the height of the Cold War, this aircraft was part of Strategic Air Command’s “Operation Looking Glass,” which mirrored the nuclear command control at Offutt Air Force Base. Now, this historic aircraft is on display at the Strategic Air and Space Museum in Ashland.
A few weeks ago we had an Air Show over in Billings, featuring the Blue Angels.
Went (of course) and talked a few of the grandkids into joining me....Had the absolute best time walking all over, sticking my nose into everything and talking with everyone had the time to talk with me.
Managed to work my way right up next to where the "Blues" were parked before the show started and right in the middle of chatting with a couple of their ground crew it hit me.
Everybody there was same age as my grandkids....the people I trained could have been their grandfathers.
And now they're putting Looking Glass (which was a sometimes unwelcome part of my life in those days) in a museum.
....somebody trying to make me feel old or something?
I worked at the receiver site at Barksdale AFB in late 60s. I maintained the comm gear. I would hear on the radios at regular intervals; "Skyking, Skyking. This is Looking Glass, this is Looking Glass". Then they would transmit their codes.
More interesting now than it was back then.
