Stephen King Played ‘Mambo No. 5’ So Much His Wife ‘Threatened to Divorce’ Him: ‘One More Time, and I’m Going to — Leave You’

Lou Bega’s “Mambo No. 5,” a 1999 smash that topped the pop charts in most global territories, is one of the most love-it-or-hate-it songs of all time — Stephen King’s wife definitely falls in the latter camp. The author recently spoke to Rolling Stone to promote his latest novel, “Holly,” and revealed his wife once threatened to divorce him due to his love of the infamous track.

“Oh, yeah. Big time,” King said when asked if the rumors about his love for “Mambo No. 5” are true. “My wife threatened to divorce me. I played that a lot.”

“I had the dance mix,” the author continued. “I loved those extended play things and I played both sides of it. And one of them was just total instrumental. And I played that thing until my wife just said, ‘One more time, and I’m going to -leave you.'”

King must’ve stopped, as he’s been happily married to Tabitha King since 1971. The couple has three children together, including the writers Joe Hill and Owen King. The author said his wife’s ultimatum arrived while he was writing “11/22/63,” his 2011 novel about a time traveller who tries to prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

“Mambo No. 5,” recorded by Bega, a German singer, was rooted in a 1949 instrumental single by Dámaso Pérez Prado that Bega sampled for his rewritten vocal rendition, which called out women’s names (“A little bit of Monica…”). It was the performer’s only significant hit, peaking at No. 3 in the U.S. while going all the way to No. 1 in the U.K., Canada, Italy, France and more than 20 other countries.

King detailed more of his daily listening in the interview. “When I write, there are things that I can listen to a lot,” he said. “And a lot of it is techno stuff or disco stuff, but techno in particular. There’s this group called LCD Soundsystem, and I love that. Fatboy Slim is somebody else. I can just listen to that stuff. If you tried to write and listen to Leonard Cohen, how the fuck would you do that? Because you’d have to listen to the words and you’d have to listen to what he’s saying. But with some of the techno stuff, or KC and the Sunshine Band, Gloria Gaynor, it’s all good.”

What is King currently listening to? “Lately, I think that I’ve been sort of stuck on Foghat and Bob Seger, people like that,” he said. “But I’ve also been listening to a fair amount of country music. So a lot of Travis Tritt and Alan Jackson, people like that.”

King’s new book, “Holly,” is now available for purchase.

Well it is a catchy tune. Surprised he’s not a big fan of La Macarena too.

And Bobby “the brain” was not that smart either, as was proven in his debate with Ronald Reagan. Bobby was so destroyed by Reagan that he wanted the person that arranged the debate to be fired.

Let us look, in REAL TIME, the hatred of Nixon and Trump, in each one's eras.

There was NO internet/social media, cable T.V. when Nixon was Veep, running for president, nor when he WAS president.

But the "WHISPER CAMPAIGNS", radio and T.V. news( as well as televised House and Senate shown LIVE ), and newspapers were all there and and beating up/trashing Nixon constantly.

Nixon held great rallies! Though smaller ones than Trump has, they were just as stirring, lots of fun, singing, entertainment ( live bands ), and yes, the ones in NYC were huge, by that day's standards.

There was also "merch"...buttons! And the buttons were in every language.

And there was a song: NIXON'S THE ONE.

So our side WAS fighting back...even in what today are BLUE cities.

And as you state, they are STILL beating up on Nixon; he is the perennial "boogieman"! :-(

Re Vietnam............

No damned way would Nixon have gotten us involved, had the '60 election NOT been stolen from him!

Yes, Ike had a few "advisers" there, very Sub Rosa", which, of course Nixon knew about. But Ike wasn't about to send troops in and Nixon was NOT one to have done that at all, had the fraud not taken place.

And all of the supposed "BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST", that were around JFK and LBJ would not be there either, nor, Jackie, the Frankophile, telling JFK had BETTER help out the French there and send money and troops down a deep hole.

OTOH...should things had somehow evolved, where something had to be done, Nixon, unlike LBJ ( who micromanaged it all to our defeat and McNamara, et al ) would have fought to win!

Reagan wasn't ready to be president earlier than he was.

I'm in agreement with everything you said!

Ike was NOT a good president at all; though a few good things happened under his terms...a lot of very bad things happened too, which he either ignored or made worse.

Well, the problem is that Taft would’ve only been President for 6 months tops in 1953. He would’ve died regardless early on. His policies would’ve had to have been carried out by a President Douglas MacArthur as his VP.

Clarence Manion. Had to look him up. Would’ve been curious to see if Taft/MacArthur could’ve gotten him through the confirmation process. As a registered Democrat, the GOP might’ve been unhappy with putting in one as Chief Justice. Another downside would’ve been his death occurred in 1979, and that would’ve given Jimmy Carter (who didn’t have any appointments to SCOTUS) the opportunity to appoint a Chief Justice. Then again, with MacArthur as President to ‘61, it would’ve likely altered the entire political scene onwards, and Carter might never have become President (how nice that would’ve been).

I saw on eBay a lampoon pin of “Nixon’s The One” with a heavily pregnant woman (implying he was the father). So you could see the types of mean-spirited crap directed his way.

Vietnam was going to be a catch-22, regardless. Although we can say in hindsight that it probably would’ve been better to have stayed out of what was a civil war, the march of Communism across Asia was undeniable, and we also couldn’t stand back and let the Russians acquire one more ally after another.

I lay the blame at the feet of Truman. If Gen. MacArthur could’ve taken the war in Korea straight to the Red Chinese and taken out Mao (or neutered him), leaving Chiang as ruler, those Communist uprisings would never have been able to pop up. With Chiang in Peking instead of Formosa, they would’ve obliterated any attempts by the Vietnam Communists under Ho to take control of the country (and, hence, we probably would not have had to do anything there). The Soviets would’ve been isolated as a result, and might’ve collapsed even earlier.

Go back even further, had we not been dragged into WW1 and a stalemate between Germany and Britain occurred, they would’ve been forced to bury their differences and quickly team up and take out the Communist insurgency in Russia by 1920. Then all the Communist garbage, the rise of Hitler, WW2, et al, would never have come to pass. A far different century, and far better.

It’s what I told another FReeper, you can see Satan’s fingerprints all over the 20th century up to now. Countless wars, genocides, evil ideologies, cultural deterioration, diminishment of Christianity...

Okay, let me start this off with the earliest mess, which led not only to WW I, but every war of the 20th century and the unabated rise of Communism.

Kaisar Wilhelm ( because of his birth damaged arm and what THAT did to his personality from there on ) had a "thing" about besting his Brit first cousin and the British Empire. His arrogance and inferiority complex brought him to jealous rages.

Emperor Franz Joseph, of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, lost his heir and ONLY son through Rudolf's murder and suicide pack with his mistress, leaving the Austro-Hungarian Empire with no direct blood heir, since Franz-Joseph and Elizabeth ( the world renown beauty "Sissi" ) only had three children; only one of them a son.

So that left the Emperor making his nephew, Franz Ferdinand and his Morganatic wife the heir apparent/future Emperor and Empress...with NO future heirs after them.

Franz Ferdinand, like his now dead first cousin, Rudolph, was more enlightened and not as rigid as his uncle, so would have made a pretty good Emperor....if the damned lefty , Nihilistic youths, the BLACK HAND, and some Russian higher ups hadn't planned, carried out, and/or funded his assassination!

Franz Joseph asked Wilhem to help him get an apology. If that had worked out, there would have been NO WW I! And as we know, it didn't, through no fault of Kaiser Wilhem.

President Wilson was a lot of things...a huge racist, supporter of the KKK, a lefty, very naive, and also an IDIOT !The French ( Clemenceaue )and Brits ( Lloyd George ) at Versaille had him by the nose, did whatever THEY wanted, which he signed off on and the Treaty of Versaille brought forth ALL of the wars of the 20th century AND the spread of Communism and the birth of Fascism and Nazism.

Yes, the above is rather simplified, but also FACTUAL!

All that European Royal intrigue was why our Founding Fathers, President Monroe, etc., wanted us to stay out of any messes over there. All those wars, and for what ? Destroying some of the most beautiful cities and towns on the planet and quite probably we lost our best and brightest to these wars, and look what’s left today.
