Yes, indeed, that's a real thing. In fact, your life might be endangered as a diligent black student who seeks to excel in academics. I've seen it too many times in college as a tutor. It's a very dark culture (excuse the pun.)

I taught for a number of years at an inner-city school that was at the time perhaps 50% black and 50% white. All the kids came from poor families.
All teachers have a duty for about an hour a day. It could be monitoring the cafeteria, helping out in the office, whatever. My duty was after-school tutoring. Any student with a math or science difficulty could stay after and get help.
Now here’s the interesting thing. The kids who stayed after, to try to improve their grades were almost all black. Very few whites.
