We are traveling through the Canadian Rockies and came across this guy a day ago. He was herding his harem of six cows across the Bow River. We were able to watch him head down to the river and swim across. There were maybe ten other people observing with us and, trust me, nobody ran toward him or his girls. This was by far the biggest bull elk I’ve ever seen. I was probably 100 yards away and hiding behind a tree when I took this shot.

He looks like serious business.

That is so spectacular and majestic. You must have felt like walking on Holy ground. Like coming face to face with a real Unicorn. Just look at that gigantic rack.

A very commmon question for the Rangers at Rocky Mountain National Park:
“How old (large) are the deer before they become elk?”

I enjoy lining up my lens through a hole in the heavy wire game fence, or through the car window, making sure it looks like wild nature in the background, and then convincing my friends that I walked up to 6 feet of a buffalo. The more they get agitated and insist it was dangerous, the more oblivious I seem…. God fun.

Beautiful picture. So...not all moose have the flattened part in their antlers? Always thought that was a defining feature.

Never mind... wiki first took me to moose when I searched for elk, (moose in the Americas = elk in Eurasia) but Americas elk is a different animal from Eurasia elk it seems...eek, this getting confusing. 😂
