Highly skeptical. No mention of the TYPE of charger used to get this “10 minute” charging time.

Level 1, 2 or 3? Level 1 and 2 can be used at home for 120/240V, Single Phase services. Level 3 is typically rated at 480V/3 Phase which is only found at super-charging or public charging.

I agree with being highly skeptical. Many things are hyped beyond the reality, but especially EV's because they're overtly pushed by the political class as the answer to non-existent problems.

No one should get an EV without first doing his homework on both his driving habits (both local driving and road trip driving) and real world results of various EV's in various climates (particularly the climate he drives in most).

An EV works for my wife and me because we need 2 cars anyway (having both an EV and an ICE gives us options), live in a warm climate, charge at home for local driving and the first leg of a trip, drive enough miles for the gas savings to add up (26K miles per year), virtually all of the road trips we make have plenty of fast chargers to use (in other words it's rare a road trip would require driving the ICE instead of the EV), and on trips my wife always asks to stop every 200 miles and walk around for 10-15 minutes anyway (which is conducive to charging needs and speeds in the EV on trips).

If that doesn't sound like someone else's driving habits then he probably shouldn't get an EV.

“Level 1 and 2 can be used at home for 120/240V, Single Phase services.”

Here’s a dirty utility secret. Secondary distribution systems in your neighborhood serve 10-15 homes. The system was not designed for EV charging. It can handle four EV chargers, no more. The secondary distribution system was designed for the previous era when not everything was electric.

And at the fast rate, what is the battery temp?

I assume at least ‘warm’.

Everytime I see this, I keep thinking back to the January/February 1980 issue of Elementary Electronics to the writ in column, "Ask Hank (Scott), He Knows." They made the same claim in 1979. 1979 or 2023, the laws of physics are the same.

What an Outlet

My friend's father invested in a new electric car that he says "Detroit" is trying to suppress. It's a small car that can range up to 150 miles from home and return, and recharge in five minutes due to its very unique battery system. Isn't it a crime how new energy saving systems are being shot down? -L.A., Westland, WI

If all that you say about the car is true, then think of this: assume the car's motor is rated at 40 horse power -remember, you said a small car. Assume it is run at 50 mph for the full range of the car (300 miles.) In six hours of driving, the car uses up 11,040 watt hours of energy. To replace their energy in five minutes would require an AC oulet at your home that can deliver about 92 ampere hours or approximately 1100 am- peres for 5 minutes. Just imagine the size of your house wiring. Remember, when charging a battery, you must replace every kilowatt hour of energy that was used. Also, I did not get into the matter of efficiency and heat in the battery system. A very high current charge produces excessive heat -the battery may even glow! That's not too good for the battery. Look again into the facts, you may have your information jumbled
