Quite simply, the best western, if not movie, ever made.

What a goofy movie. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance shot him in the back. Not so brave.

Vera Miles was fetching, but had off-putting medical practices.

Most people aren’t aware of it, but Liberty Valance was actually shot by the sometimes-shaky gunfighter picture below. But John Wayne objected, so Ford cut that scene out.

As great as the “stars” were, Strother Martin stole every scene he was in. And Edmond O’Brien, the performance of his career.

That was kinda the point of the movie. Notice how it destroyed John Wayne, the hero?

Play the scene out.
The Lee Marvin character would have never faced off in a fair fight with the John Wayne character.
The Lee Marvin character was determined to kill the Jimmy Stewart character.
The only way the John Wayne character could guarantee the safety of the Jimmy Stewart character was to kill the Lee Marvin character.
Jimmy Stewart = justice and civilization
Lee Marvin = evil and chaos
John Wayne = the old West
The real interesting storyline is the one between John Wayne and Vera Miles.
She chooses the somewhat wimpy lawyer over the tough rancher.
And the rancher actually gives her a good life.

That’s about as scary as handing Alec Baldwin a loaded gun.

Have you seen the movie? The song is NOT in the movie! They contracted Burt Bacharach to write the song but for some reason released the movie before the record was finished. Crazy.

Great movie but John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart were way too old for their characters. Plus character actor O.Z. Whitehead was playing a teen when he was 50 years old.
This is probably the reason the movie was done in black and white.

Stupid song, stupid movie.

If you want to understand the themes more, read The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky by Stephen Crane. It has a similar theme.

Agreed. Andy Devine gave him a run for his money, though.
Trivia: Devine played Marshal Link Appleyard. How’s that for a name?
