They actually have buildings / caves here like you posted. They call them Dairies, and it's where they used to store their dairy products I suppose. Although it doesn't seem cold enough for things like milk. The lucky ones had a spring under it, and they really would have kept items cold. They're just terribly cute, we drive around and see doors on Hills all over the place.
