Those metal roofs on the Big Island are water catchments. That’s how they get their domestic water. Being mostly solid lava the Big Island has few, if any wells. Fire protection was never the first consideration on any of the islands.
Yes, I used to live with water catchment on the BI and so did all my friends. Not for fire safety. Around where I live now many houses have metal roofs, cheaper for one thing.
