What has changed is mass migration of humans. If a migrants infected with a mosquito-borne disease come to live in a area where the type(s) of mosquitoes that can transmit that disease are present, then ... voila. The mozzies stayed put, but the diseases carrying humans did not.

Thanks for the analysis and the link. Very informative. From the link it seems there are a dozen mosquito born diseases. Years ago when I lived in Florida, each evening in town the mosquito control fogger truck would be out fogging the town. I wonder if they still do that?
