It is almost beyond my comprehension that something begun so far back in time, that took so long to complete... and nobody sacred or secular managed to uglify it in six centuries. Equally astounding is that it managed to remain as intact as it did by V-E Day.
(For those interested, there are many photos of a burned-out Panther tank sitting out in front of the battered and scorched cathedral in 1945.)
